Landfills & Solid Waste Management

Proven Experience

WESTON knows the challenges associated with operating, maintaining, and expanding municipal solid waste operations. WESTON has helped numerous strategic clients with their landfill and solid waste operations.

For the Dalton-Whitfield Regional Solid Waste Management Authority, WESTON worked with the Carpet and Rug Institute to develop a waste reduction survey and strategies for reducing waste from the carpet industry and associated industries. We also worked with the client to develop a processing facility for receiving commercial and industrial waste and extracting recyclable carpet and paper. WESTON has a 10-year working relationship with the Carpet and Rug Institute implementing sound solid waste management and waste reduction practices.

For the American Plastics Council, WESTON is conducting school recycling studies to understand the operation and costs of current solid waste collection, disposal, and recycling programs, and recommending new approaches for school programs. Market research identifies potential collectors, processors, and markets for the recyclable materials, and outcome reports include recommendations on how to increase participation and decrease contamination through public education.

For Fresh Kills Landfill, New York City, WESTON developed a management information system for the largest landfill in the nation. The data were used to provide oversight and coordination of operations at the site and to assist in permit development.

For the City of Detroit, Michigan, WESTON has provided waste-to-energy technical support for more than 15 years, assisting the city in all stages of project development, and continuing through operational monitoring.

For the Southern States Waste Management Coalition, WESTON developed a database of solid waste information sources that will be used by members of this regional organization of 16 states to foster the development of integrated solid waste management policies for the region.

For the State of North Carolina, in support of the state's solid waste management planning program, WESTON developed goals and actions to meet the state's objectives, and provided guidance on local government's role in achieving these objectives.
