GreenGrid® Roof
First-of-its Kind at Federal Facility
Vegetative Roof Sets Stage for Future Roofing Solutions
The Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD) is the largest
full-service electronics maintenance facility in the Department
of Defense (DoD). The GreenGrid® vegetative
roof installed at the depot is considered to be the first green
roof on a U.S. DoD building. It is located on one wing of the Headquarters
Building and is part of a demonstration project that will measure
energy savings, stormwater runoff reduction, stormwater quality,
and roof membrane longevity.
Eye on Sustainability
- The GreenGrid® roof analysis showed
a 10% reduction in stormwater runoff, improved stormwater quality,
and a 25% reduction in energy costs for the building.
- A 30% reduction
in energy costs is expected for the building.
Project Features
- Preparatory work included the removal
of approximately 12,000 square feet of existing stone ballast
and the application of additional membrane flashing at field
seam locations.
- Over 60 varieties of Sedums and
Alpine plant species fill the 1,538 GreenGrid® extensive modules.
- 14,141 square feet of green roof space
on one wing of headquarters building.
- Modules made of recycled plastic
trays measuring 4 feet long, 2 feet wide and 4 inches
deep.
Performance Milestones
- Maintained the waterproofing warranty on
the roof, which is expected to last significantly longer now
that it has been greened.
- Completed green roof installation in 7 days.
