Solar Power System Provides Clean Energy and Green Jobs

The City of Newark, NJ, asked Weston Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®) for help in implementing a solar energy project that would increase use of renewable energy, energy security, and the number of green jobs—without requiring the city to provide project funding. With no capital outlay, the city receives clean renewable energy at a lower cost than from its regular power supplier, reducing its energy costs and carbon footprint.

Solar Provides Clean Energy

Within 9 months of initial concept discussions with the city, WESTON had installed the solar power system. The city’s motors building, the Wilson Avenue Garage, was selected for the solar project. The garage, under a new 20-year lease, is used to repair city vehicles, including police cars, garbage trucks, and fire trucks. In prior years, annual energy use was approximately 290,000 kilowatt-hours, a figure forecasted to increase because of a recently completed addition.

The 185-kilowatt solar power system, equipped with 806 photovoltaic panels, saves the city money and reduces greenhouse gas emissions:

  • Generates approximately 75% of the motors building’s power needs
  • Power generated costs less than PSE&G-supplied power (based on current PSE&G rates)
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 179 tons a year

Public-Private Partnerships Allow for Cost-Effective Green Solutions

The project was financially feasible because of various solar power tax credits available to private companies, but not to municipalities. Therefore, WESTON owns and operates the panels, and under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), sells the power to the building owner, who in turn resells it at the same price to the city.

The city bore no costs associated with the purchase, installation, and maintenance of the system, and purchasing the power generated provides the city with a secure, cost-effective source of green energy. WESTON secured financing for the panels, owns the power generated, and receives the resulting tax credits.

Green Jobs

WESTON partnered with a Newark design and contracting firm to conduct both classroom and on-the-job training for Newark residents to work on this and future solar initiatives. Several Newark residents received training in solar panel installation, with most gaining certificates in the field. Others were hired by the design and contracting firm and received on-the-job training.

Benefits for the City of Newark

The city has and continues to gain numerous benefits from the installation of the solar power system:

  • No capital cost, allowing the city to reserve funds for urgent needs and avoid the financial burden of directly implementing a clean-energy solution
  • An immediate reduction in energy costs and a long-term known rate
  • Energy security through a power source available even if the grid is down
  • A smaller carbon footprint
  • Education and outreach opportunities via a “virtual kiosk” that displays real-time data on the amount of green energy generated and carbon emissions avoided
