Grand Opening of Vista Hermosa Park – Green Roof Installation in Keeping with Sustainable Park Design and Environmental Education Goals

LOS ANGELES, CA — July 21, 2008 – Weston Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®) announced today their latest successful green roof project at the newly dedicated Vista Hermosa Park. The park is located adjacent to Edward R. Roybal Learning Center near downtown Los Angeles at 100 N. Toluca Street. A project of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, and Edward R. Roybal Learning Center, the park recreates the natural landscape of the area while providing open space, outdoor environmental education opportunities, a children’s adventure area, and a FIFA-regulation soccer field. In keeping with sustainability goals, WESTON installed 2,576 square feet of their GreenGrid® Modular Green Roof System on the park’s ranger station and two park facility buildings.

The GreenGrid® installation is one of the first green roofs near downtown Los Angeles. The green roofs help reduce the “urban heat island effect,” reduce energy consumption and improve air quality. Park visitors, including students from the adjacent high school, will learn about the sustainable solutions green roofs provide.

“The MRCA elected to use the GreenGrid® system for its flexibility and ease of installation,” reports Michael Drennan, WESTON Vice President and Pacific Coast Regional Manager. Modules are four-inches deep and planted with drought-resistant plants. A water-efficient drip irrigation system promotes plant establishment and maintenance during drought conditions. “The system offered a unique and pleasing way for designers to promote environmentally sustainable design and blend the buildings within the surrounding natural landscape,” Drennan said.

According to WESTON Project Manager, Michael Rieger, “The GreenGrid® system helps to retain up to 70% of stormwater during a 1-inch rainfall.” Research also shows that green roofs can reduce energy and cooling costs from 25 to 50 percent for the floor directly below the roof due to their great insulating properties. “Especially in California where air quality and energy costs are crucial, green roofs are a harbinger of hope to save energy, curb greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, and reduce stormwater pollution,” states Rieger.

Drennan adds, “Becoming more sustainable in one of the largest urban regions in our country will require innovation and creativity. It’s really exciting as we see more and more opportunities in the Los Angeles Region where the Mayor and City Council have adopted a strong policy toward sustainability. Green roofs are just one example of how WESTON is providing integrated solutions to meet our clients’ sustainability goals.”
