WESTON Begins Removal Action for Discarded Munitions; Surf City and Ship Bottom New Jersey
WEST CHESTER, PA — February
10, 2009 – Weston
Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®)
announced today its award of a $13.6 million Task Order by the
US Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District (Corps), to undertake
a removal action for Discarded Military Munitions (DMM) at the Public
Beaches of Surf City and Ship Bottom Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
Project mobilization began the week of January 19.
After munitions were
first found on the beaches after the initial beachfill in Spring
of 2007, a time critical removal action for munitions was initiated
by the Corps and was completed by WESTON as scheduled and without
incident. Since that time, the Corps has been performing ongoing monitoring
of the beach.
Under the latest task order, WESTON will locate
and remove munitions from the dune, berm, and inter-tidal areas
of the beach through excavation and mechanically screening the material.
The screened material will be backfilled and regraded to pre-existing
conditions. All the public beach access points, sand fencing and
dune grass plantings installed as part of the original beachfill project
will be restored as the project progresses to completion. In the
surf zone areas, WESTON will conduct magnetometer surveys to identify
anomalies and will dig at those locations to investigate and remove
any potential munitions. Construction activities are scheduled to be
completed by May 22, 2009.
According to Patrick G. McCann, WESTON President
and CEO, “We are pleased the Corps has
once again placed their trust in us to complete this munitions
removal action. As a trusted integrator, our project team is committed
to completing this project safely and on time. We will work with
the project stakeholders and the community to keep them informed of
our actions and put the safety of the public and our team first. We
look forward to a successful result which is so important to local
tourism and the economy.”
