WESTON Supports Newark’s Revitalization Vision Through Volunteerism

Newark, NJ — June 25, 2010 – On Wednesday, June 23, 2010, more than 130 employee-owners from Weston Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®) helped Newark’s East Side High School with various school improvements. Projects included renovating classrooms, painting, building shelving units, and installing a roof-top solar panel. WESTON volunteers also participated in cleanup and refurbishment projects at the adjacent Independence Park.

East Side High School Principal Dr. Mario Santos, East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador, and Essex County Park Director Daniel Salvante thanked WESTON for their continued partnership with the community and took a tour of the progress.

The City of Newark, Essex County, and WESTON share a vision to use innovative, sustainability-oriented approaches for revitalization. In 2008 WESTON first partnered with the City of Newark to clean up East Ward’s Liberty Park and in 2009 developed, designed, and now owns and operates the first solar panels on a City-occupied building.

Participant Patrick G. McCann, WESTON president and chief executive officer, commented, “At WESTON, we strive to make a difference in the world, but it starts by making a difference in the communities where we live and work. Our employees in New Jersey have been supporting urban renewal programs for several years now, and I am very proud of their passion and commitment.”

Tours of the school highlighted WESTON’s handiwork, showing the new educational energy-efficient upgrades and explaining the many benefits of solar panels and green roofs. Forty new flags in the gymnasium represent the native countries of the school children.

WESTON’s involvement will not end with Wednesday’s events. Company representatives donated an additional $3,000 and are working with East Side High School to integrate solar energy and green roof projects into the school’s freshman environmental science curriculum this fall. Students will have an opportunity to learn firsthand how green roofs can help improve urban settings by reducing stormwater runoff and the urban heat island effect, and understand the benefits and practical limitations of solar energy.
