WESTON Announces Imminent Completion of Miami River Maintenance Dredging
MIAMI, FL — October 15,
2008 – In conjunction with the Miami River Commission’s Last Scoop Ceremony, Weston Solutions, Inc.
(WESTON®) announced today the imminent completion of the maintenance dredging and disposal of contaminated sediments from the Miami River navigational channel in Miami, Florida. The project, which is anticipated to be completed within 30 days, was awarded in April 2004 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to WESTON and joint venture partner Bean Environmental. The dredging will facilitate additional commerce through the state’s only shallow-draft port and provide significant water quality and ecosystem improvements for the surrounding community.
The Miami River navigational channel, which varies
in width from 100 to 150 feet, is a 5.5-mile long narrow shipping corridor
with substantial maritime traffic that stretches from the Miami Airport
to the Bay of Biscayne through both Miami-Dade County and the City
of Miami. The 4-year project included the dredging of over 700,000
cubic yards of sediment. The dredged material was subsequently dried
and processed at two sites along the river, and then hauled to nearby
landfills. This maintenance project, which dredged the river to a depth
of 15 feet, marks the first time since it was constructed in 1935 that
it has been dredged.
"The dredging of the Miami River has been in the works for nearly thirty years. I am deeply gratified that it has finally been completed," stated Eric Beurmann, Chairman of the Miami River Commission and South Florida Water Management District Board of Governors. He added, "We would not have been successful without the hard work of Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Governor Crist and the Florida Legislature, the Florida Inland Navigation District, the South Florida Water Management District, Miami-Dade County, the City of Miami, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District, and the WESTON/Bean joint venture."
“The Miami River project epitomizes our approach
to project and client integration,” stated Patrick G. McCann, WESTON
President and Chief Executive Officer. “By working with our client
and their stakeholders as well as our joint venture partners, we provided
a safe, integrated dredging, sediment disposal, and beneficial use
solution for the community, which will further the economic and greenways
redevelopment along the river.”
