WESTON Moves Forward with Better Buildings Challenge in Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA — October 11, 2012 – Weston Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®), a global environmental and redevelopment firm with a 40-year history in Atlanta, has signed on as a Gold Sponsor for the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge (BBC). WESTON will provide energy and water assessments for healthcare facilities that have pledged their participation in the Challenge. The BBC aims to reduce water and energy consumption 20% by 2020 across a variety of buildings in over 40 cities.

WESTON is providing sustainability assessments for Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown and will help the hospitals prioritize and customize solutions to benefit their unique operations. Working directly with WESTON, Craig Tindall, Senior Vice President of Operations and Facilities at Grady Health System recognized the value the company could bring saying, "Hospitals are fundamentally about improving the health of their patients, staff and the communities they serve. In the past few years, the link between the environment and human health has been brought into focus."

The BBC is a national program announced by President Barack Obama in February 2011. To date, over 40 cities are participating, with Atlanta one of the first three cities to join the challenge. Atlanta was also the first to complete a showcase project at the Boisfeuillet Jones - Atlanta Civic Center. "WESTON is a welcome partner in our drive to increase energy and water efficiency across downtown Atlanta over the next several years," said Lauren Dufort, Director of Sustainability at Central Atlanta Progress. "Hospitals, which are open around the clock and rely on specialized medical technology, pose a particular challenge. To meet our goals, we will rely on the expertise that WESTON brings to the table."

Anna Gilmore-Hall leads WESTON's healthcare sustainability team that will provide holistic assessments and strategic planning to hospitals and health systems around the country. When WESTON learned of the Atlanta BBC, it seemed logical to offer their expertise in a community where they live and work. "It's an honor to be a part of the Better Buildings Challenge which will forever change this city for future generations," said Gilmore-Hall. "We look forward to continuing our tradition of providing sustainable solutions that support the city's goals."

WESTON intends to assist Atlanta area hospitals as they strive to meet sustainable goals. Hospitals are among the most energy intensive commercial buildings, with a baseline of more than two and a half times the energy usage and carbon dioxide emissions.

Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration illustrates that buildings are responsible for almost half of the energy consumed and 38% of all GHG emissions in the United States. According to the EPA, inpatient healthcare ranks as the second largest commercial energy user after the food service industry. Hospitals are also often the largest water users in the communities they serve. Currently, about 8% of U.S. energy demand is used to treat, pump, and heat water.

WESTON's team is uniquely qualified to support the city's goals, with a long history of assisting the City of Atlanta and the surrounding southeast region with projects that include: environmental consulting and remediation services; brownfield redevelopment services; stormwater monitoring for sanitation, sewer, and solid waste services; water treatment design and services; landfill gas collection systems including maintenance and monitoring services; major landfill closures; and the installation of WESTON's GreenGrid® pre-vegetated modular green roof system on the Woodruff Arts Center, the ASHRA Building, a SCAD dorm, the Epstein Group Buildings, Emory Point Development and other commercial and residential properties.
