WESTON Wins 2007 AON Build America Award from the Associated General Contractors of America
SAN ANTONIO, TX — Weston Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®)
was named winner of the 2007 AON Build America Award in the Environmental – New
Construction category at the 88th Annual Associated General Contractors
(AGC) Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas. WESTON’s 1.5 mile Reach Removal Cleanup Action on the Housatonic River in Pittsfield, Massachusetts was one of 15 winners selected from 100 nominations from across the country. Sponsored by the AON Construction Services Group, the Awards showcase the construction industry’s top projects.
According to Patrick G. McCann, WESTON Chairman,
CEO and President, “WESTON is proud to have teamed with our long-time partners the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to complete this important project. The restoration of the river corridor in Pittsfield represents a major step in revitalizing the historic City of Pittsfield and the entire Berkshire region.”
The Housatonic River Site in Pittsfield, Massachusetts
has garnered national attention as one of the most significant polychlorinated
bi-phenyl (PCB) contamination sites in the country. Initial work on
the 1.5 Mile Reach Removal Action began in 2000 after extensive negotiation
between Federal, state and local government agencies. Design and construction
of PCB remediation in the Housatonic River through downtown Pittsfield,
Massachusetts took place from 2002 through 2006 at a cost of approximately
$70 million.
This river cleanup project was one of the largest
and most complex of its kind to be implemented in the Northeast. The
project was completed 1.5 years ahead of schedule, saving several million
dollars, with over 400,000 WESTON and subcontractor man-hours worked
with an excellent safety record.
Remediation activities encompassed
a wide range of activities, including: road building; sheet pile
cofferdam construction; installation of a removable dam; installation
and removal of a gravity bypass system; water treatment; soil and sediment
excavation and disposal; reconstruction and repair of existing retaining
walls and construction of new retaining structures; riverbed and bank
restoration; native plantings; and aquatic and riparian habitat enhancements.
