WESTON and Charter Environmental Receive DoD Nunn-Perry Award
for Outstanding Mentor-Protégé Program
WEST CHESTER, Pa. - May 21, 2002 - Roy F. Weston, Inc. (WESTON), a leading environmental and redevelopment firm, and Charter Environmental, Inc. (Charter), environmental contractors and waste management specialists, are recipients of the 2002 Department of Defense (DoD) Nunn-Perry Award in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments under the DoD Mentor-Protégé Program. The Award recognizes mentor-protégé teams that have excelled in technical developments, cost-efficiencies, and increased business opportunities for small disadvantaged firms. WESTON and Charter were one of 12 defense prime contractor/protégé teams to receive the award sponsored by DoD's Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization Office.
Since July 1999, WESTON has served as a construction remediation Mentor to Charter of Chelsea, Massachusetts. Benefiting from the relationship with WESTON, Charter has seen its revenue and employee base increase significantly over the course of the Program. The WESTON-Charter Team has worked together on numerous projects since 1997 and the relationship serves as a model for establishing strong business-to-business relationships.
The DoD Mentor-Protégé Program provides an environment whereby large business fosters the growth and development of small business to better serve the Federal Government and the business community at large. Bruce A. Campbell, WESTON's mentor- protégé liaison comments, "Our business association has grown from one initial subcontract into a strong and trusted partnership whereby ideas, opportunities, and advice are readily exchanged. We look forward to continuing this relationship as Charter builds itself into a premier construction remediation services provider."
The Nunn-Perry award is named in honor of former Senator Sam Nunn, who sponsored legislation to create the Defense Department's Mentor-Protégé program, and former Secretary of Defense William Perry in recognition of his implementation of the program. The program, which began in 1991, is a national initiative to encourage large defense contractors to develop the technical capabilities of small disadvantaged businesses.
WESTON delivers integrated environmental engineering solutions to industry and government worldwide. With an emphasis on creating lasting economic value for its clients, the company provides services in environmental remediation, redevelopment, and management and compliance.
