WESTON/Bean Joint Venture to Clean Historic Miami River Featured in South Florida’s Sun-Sentinel
The WESTON/Bean Joint Venture, which was awarded the Miami River clean-up contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in 2004, was mentioned in South Florida’s newspaper, The Sun-Sentinel, this January. The article highlighted the success of the project so far, the expectations of the highly-experienced clean-up crew, and the benefits this restoration will provide to the economy and surrounding community.
The $74-million clean-up project, which began October 27th, 2004, will allow for the removal of 7 decades of debris and contaminated sediment from one of Florida’s smallest and most abused waterways – the Miami River. When WESTON/Bean has completed their task of removing the nearly 1 million tons of contaminated sediment, the Miami River will no longer leach the hazardous buildup into the Biscayne Bay, an accomplished feat considering 40,000 tons of the debris have been deposited into the bay in the last decade alone. The Sun-Sentinel reports that the Miami River will also “become more navigable, increasing the $4 billion worth of cargo that already moves between its shores.”
