WESTON Project Manager Randy Elder Mentioned in The Saginaw News
Randy Elder, a Project Manager in the WESTON Okemos office, was mentioned in The Saginaw News for answering questions about the Velsicol chemical plant site study being conducted in St. Louis. A non-aqueous phase liquid substance that was recently found at the site is endangering a part of the Pine River that had previously been cleaned under a $100 million Superfund cleanup project. Randy told The Saginaw News that investigators recently discovered the presence of an additional toxic substance in the groundwater that has the potential to discharge to the river. The compound, 1,2-dibromo 3-chloropropane or DBCP, had once been used at the plant to manufacture fire retardant and and was used in chemical spray for crops.
WESTON's Okemos office has been assisting the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) with the site study being conducted at the Velsicol plant site to determine the type and location of contaminants that exist on the property. DEQ and EPA officials hope to use the study results to devise a plan to repair the site's slurry wall and clay cap. The site study is due for completion in 2006.
