The Macon Telegraph Features WESTON for Installing Gas Wells for Methane Collection at Georgia Landfill

On July 11, the Macon Telegraph (Macon, GA’s local news source) reported that WESTON and the City of Macon are on track to meet the state deadline of November for installing a methane collection system at the Walker Road landfill in Macon, GA.

WESTON, the city’s contractor for the project, has already installed 79 gas wells for the project. WESTON’s Butch Butterfield, site manager for the project, stated that directional boring – the method WESTON is employing so that the wells can be drilled at various angles – “has never been used at a landfill before.” These new wells will be linked by piping that WESTON is currently installing. Butterfield says the wells will then collect methane and other gases caused by decomposing trash. The new methane collection system being installed by WESTON will earn the city more income because it will produce more gas that will eventually be sold to Cherokee Brick, a company that pays the city about $100,000 per year for landfill gas. WESTON is also contracted to grass the sides of the landfill and install terraces in order to remediate some existing erosion problems at the landfill.
