WESTON Featured in Computerworld Magazine for Columbia Shuttle Disaster Data Collection Effort
Computerworld magazine mentioned WESTON® in its July 2003 issue for WESTON’s contribution to EPA’s Columbia Shuttle disaster response. WESTON was contracted by EPA to perform debris data collection and location mapping at the site of the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster.
In response to EPA’s request, WESTON employees developed a field data collection program using HP iPaq Pocket PCs, 40% of which included GPS receivers which automated entry of location data. WESTON’s role in providing technology for the data collection effort contributed to refining the daily debris search and ultimately narrowing the search for Columbia’s data recorder (described in Computerworld as the equivalent of a commercial airliner’s “black box”).
