Anchorage Daily News Mentions WESTON for Fast Response to Oil Spill at Elmendorf AFB
WESTON® employees were mentioned in the Anchorage Daily News for their roles in a group of 36 professionals responding to a large oil spill that occurred at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, AK, on May 1st, 2002.
WESTON’s cleanup crew used two vacuum trucks to remove approximately about 650 gallons of fuel that had flowed into a pit surrounding the pipeline’s main valve. WESTON used a third truck to remove about 50 gallons of fuel from the base’s asphalt parking lot.
Dave Zucker, the State Department of Environmental Conservation specialist responsible for reviewing spill plans, commended the crew’s fast response time. “Any amount of fuel is too much to spill, but based on the amount of fuel they pump and they way their system’s set up, they responded very quickly.”
Between 850 and 1,000 gallons of JP-8 jet fuel were spilled at the hangar on the north side of the east-west runway at Elmendorf AFB.
